Charleroi, a small town close to
Brussels, can be taken as a sym-
bol of the problems affecting
today’s Europe. With the col-
lapse of manufacturing indu-
stry, the rising unemployment,
the increasing immigration and
the lack of a shared identity, to-
day’s social unease reflects on
the lives of the citizens and the
physical environment they live
in.

CŒUROPE – THE DARK HEART OF EUROPE
The point of view of Muslim fe-
males is virtually absent from
the current debate on the rela-
tion between the West and the
Muslim world. Sumaya (blog-
ger, first Muslim city councilor
in Milan), Takoua (cartoonist
from Rome) and Batul (psychia-
trist from Trento) are 3 eman-
cipated, ambitious and opinio-
nated Muslim women living
in Italy. Through sequences of
their everyday life and inter-
views, they provide an unusual
portray of young Muslim fema-
les in today’s Europe and cover
most of the issues inflaming the
debate.
