A western film crew accesses
Eritrea, an isolated country
defined by many as a “golden
cage”.
They are allegedly casting for
Khadija, the beautiful and fier-
ce Eritrean woman who fought
at the side of the Italian Royal
Cavalry in WW2.
An epic story of love and bra-
very from the past, a different
look at modern Eritrea.

LOOKING FOR KHADIJA
87
FEATURE LENGTH · CREATIVE DOCS
40 years after her last documen-
tary, 85 years old Cecilia Mangini,
the first Italian female documen-
tary filmmaker, embarks on a
road trip across Apulia, her native
region once in full expansion. She
discovers a land ravaged: the big-
gest steel mill in Europe, located
in Taranto, poisoned the area. Her
travel turns then into an attempt
to understand how the relation
between men and industrializa-
tion has turned the post-war era
optimism into uncertainty.
