YEMEN,
DESPITE THE WAR
OUR MAN
IN CAIRO
In war-torn Yemen there still is a civil society that
is enduring, despite bombs and destruction,
violence of the militias and a devastating
humanitarian crisis. Beyond all that, there are
resilient simple men and women who are carrying
out a possible reconstruction, determined
to preserve and foster their original cultural
identity. A teacher, a film director, a journalist,
a photographer, a music student are fighting
their silent battle against obscurantism and the
superpowers that are devastating their country. A
very rare testimony from Yemen, where journalists’
lives are threatened, made possible by the
collaboration of an Italian-Yemeni war reporter
and 3 crews of local filmmakers.
Since El-Sisi seized power, arbitrary
arrest, torture and enforced
disappearances have reached
unprecedented levels in Egypt.
Starting from the murder of the
Cambridge researcher in Cairo,
Giulio Regeni, Our Man in Cairo
investigates the most authoritarian
regime in the Middle East. We will
hear the testimonies of those who
have been tortured by the regime
and look into the economic interests
that are pushing the U.S. and the
E.U. to turn a blind eye. Finally, we
ask whether El-Sisi’s crackdown on
human rights may be, in fact just
creating the conditions for a new,
violent uprising in Egypt.

ZEHRA
AND THE
OTHERS
Zehra Doğan is a girl. She is Turkish, of Kurdish ethnicity. She is a
journalist, but above all she is a painter and it’s because of a painting
that she was accused of terrorism. However Zehra is not the only
Turkish woman who has paid with her freedom for a crime she did
not commit. Asli Erdogan, world-known writer and Sebnem Korur
Fincanci, a university professor, were incarcerated for terrorism.
All three have dared to express dissent against the cruel war that
Erdoğan is conducting against the Kurds. After 3 years of prison,
Zehra has been freed on 24 February 2019.
